Frequently Asked Questions
What is Riverfest?
Riverfest is a three-day celebration of the Susquehanna River, local history, outdoor recreation, and community. The event commemorates the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War, when local residents prevented Confederate troops from crossing the Susquehanna River in June 1863. Riverfest features boat tours, outdoor recreation activities, educational programs, races, watch parties, and the lighting of the historic bridge piers.
What is the River Expo?
The Outdoor Recreation Expo takes place on Saturday, June 27, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Visitors can meet outdoor recreation organizations and outfitters, learn about paddling, hiking, biking, fishing, and other river-related activities, discover volunteer opportunities, and connect with local recreation partners. All are welcome to attend this free expo. More details at: River Expo.
What is the Bridge Burner Challenge?
The Bridge Burner Challenge is Riverfest’s signature run-and-paddle race. Participants race to “burn the bridge before the Confederates cross” by completing a 3.5-mile run and a 2.5-mile paddle on the Susquehanna River. Participants may compete in the Run & Paddle division or select run-only and paddle-only options. The event begins at Columbia River Park and follows portions of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and the Susquehanna River.
Do I need my own kayak for the Bridge Burner Challenge?
Participants may bring their own canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. Rental kayaks are available through participating outfitters, but availability is limited and advance reservations are recommended. All participants must wear a personal flotation device (PFD) during the paddling portion of the race.
What happens if it rains?
Riverfest events are generally held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather or dangerous river conditions, individual activities may be delayed, modified, or canceled for participant safety. The Bridge Burner Challenge may be converted to a run-only event if river conditions require it.
What is the Riverfest Finale?
The Riverfest Finale takes place Sunday evening, June 28. At 7:45 PM, all 26 historic bridge piers in the Susquehanna River will be illuminated with fire, recreating the dramatic scene of the bridge burning during the Civil War. This year’s lighting of all 26 piers is part of the region’s America 250 commemorations and is expected to be one of the largest Riverfest finales ever presented.
